Composite Fillings
in Los Angeles, CA

When it comes to tooth decay treatment, you might’ve heard of getting dental fillings or crowns. But fillings typically only fill tiny cavities, while dental crowns can fix deeper, more extensive cavities. Is there a perfect, “just right” general dentistry solution for cavities that are sizes in-between?

At BLVD Dental Aesthetics, Beverly Hills dentist Dr. Daniel Adelpour offers dental inlays and onlays as alternatives to traditional cavity treatments. Serving as a “Goldilocks Solution” for mid-size cavities, inlays and onlays are more substantial than a dental filling and less intrusive than a dental crown.

What are inlays and onlays?

Before discussing the differences between dental onlays and inlays, we have to give a brief anatomy lesson on the tooth’s cusp. The cusp is the tooth’s elevated, pointed, or projected part. If you run your tongue along the top of your teeth, you can feel ridges and valleys. The pointed, top part of the ridge is a cusp.

Inlays and onlays resemble a hybrid between a dental filling and a crown. In their most basic definitions, the significant difference is that:

  • A dental inlay fills in hollows in a tooth between the cusps.
  • A dental onlay fills beyond the cusps and is for a larger area.

Signs that You Might Need an Inlay or Onlay

Like dental crowns and fillings, inlays and onlays are used to restore teeth after damage or decay. With that, some issues that inlays and onlays can rectify are:

  • Moderate tooth decay
  • Fractured or damaged dental structures
  • Hypersensitive, exposed teeth

Inlay and Onlay Placement Expectations

The process of getting a dental inlay or onlay is like getting a traditional dental crown:

  • Examination: Our dentist will examine your smile. This might include taking digital x-rays, performing a physical exam, and testing your oral health in other ways.
  • Preparation: Dr. Adelpour will use laser light to remove any unwanted dental tissue and simultaneously cauterize it.
  • Digital impressions: Our dentist will use the advanced iTero 5D scanner to create digital impressions of the prepared and surrounding teeth.
  • Temporary crown placement: Dr.  Adelpour will place a temporary restoration to provisionally protect the prepared tooth.
  • Lab creation: Lab technicians will take your impressions and handcraft an inlay or onlay.
  • Second visit: When the restoration arrives at our Wilshire Blvd office, we will call you back for a short, second visit so that our dentist can cement the inlay or onlay.
