How to Get Rid of White Spots on Teeth

If you have white spots on your teeth, you may have gotten used to the idea that no form of teeth whitening can completely correct the problem. You may have tried at-home teeth whitening treatments to no effect (or worse, your white spots may have become more visible). You may have even seen a dentist for professional whitening, and while some treatments have proven effective for white spots, not everyone gets such happy results.

Icon treatment is a new form of white spot correction that doesn’t use teeth-whitening chemicals. It’s so easy and non-invasive that you don’t even need local anesthetic to have it done. At our Los Angeles dental office, we can perform Icon treatment and finally give you the even, pearly white look you’ve been dreaming of.

What Is Icon Treatment?

To understand how Icon treatment works, it may be helpful to understand what white spot lesions are and why they don’t respond well to other cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening.

White Spot Lesions

White spot lesions (WSLs) can happen for a variety of reasons, but the root cause is a loss of enamel or underdevelopment of enamel. WSLs appear opaque white and typically contrast with the more natural white or off-white color of your tooth. When the enamel has an uneven porosity, calcium and other minerals that typically strengthen the enamel aren’t distributed evenly, resulting in lesions.

There are many potential causes, including:

  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Congenital defects
  • Illness
  • Certain prescription drugs
  • Over or underexposure to Fluoride

For a long time, WSLs have been considered unresponsive to cosmetic treatment. Recent developments like Icon treatment are showing significant improvement (and even complete removal of) these white spots.

Icon Treatment Eliminates Lesions to Create a More Even Tooth Color

While teeth whitening treatment uses hydrogen and peroxide to lift stains from the surface of the tooth, it can’t evenly penetrate the lesions. For most people, this means that white spots stay visible after whitening. Icon treatment, on the other hand, uses medicine to get rid of the lesion. Since the WSL is a physical defect in the enamel, you’ll notice an immediate aesthetic improvement upon removing the lesion.

The process of icon treatment looks like this:

  • Your dentist may use micro-abrasion to expose the channels on the surface of your teeth that travel to the deeper layers.
  • Then, they will use a light acid to etch the surface of the tooth (slightly roughen the enamel).
  • After, they will apply a special resin and let it absorb. They may repeat this process two or three times.
  • Between each application of resin, your dentist will cure the area with a UV light and floss between the teeth.

The amazing end result? An immediate improvement in the appearance of your white spot lesions.
