What Is Icon Treatment?
To understand how Icon treatment works, it may be helpful to understand what white spot lesions are and why they don’t respond well to other cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening.
White Spot Lesions
White spot lesions (WSLs) can happen for a variety of reasons, but the root cause is a loss of enamel or underdevelopment of enamel. WSLs appear opaque white and typically contrast with the more natural white or off-white color of your tooth. When the enamel has an uneven porosity, calcium and other minerals that typically strengthen the enamel aren’t distributed evenly, resulting in lesions.
There are many potential causes, including:
- Poor dental hygiene
- Congenital defects
- Illness
- Certain prescription drugs
- Over or underexposure to Fluoride
For many patients, white spot lesions do not respond predictably to whitening alone. ICON resin infiltration may reduce or mask their appearance, but results vary depending on the cause, depth, and condition of the enamel.
How ICON Resin Infiltration Can Improve the Appearance of White Spots
While teeth whitening uses peroxide-based gels to lighten natural tooth color, it may not blend white spot lesions evenly. ICON treatment uses a low-viscosity resin that infiltrates porous enamel and changes how the area reflects light. The goal is to reduce the contrast between the white spot and surrounding enamel; the degree of improvement varies by case.
The process of icon treatment looks like this:
- When appropriate, your dentist may use microabrasion or another conservative preparation step before etching; it is not required in every case.
- The tooth is isolated, and an etching gel is applied to prepare the enamel surface.
- After the area is rinsed and dried, a low-viscosity resin infiltrant is applied to the porous enamel.
- The infiltrant is light-cured with a dental curing light, and the surface is finished and polished.
The goal is a more even-looking tooth color. Results depend on the type and depth of the white spot and should be evaluated during an in-person consultation.
