Clenching or grinding your teeth does not automatically rule out Invisalign. Many patients with bruxism can still be considered for clear aligner treatment, but the worn teeth, jaw muscles, bite, restorations, gum and bone support, and existing night-guard use should be evaluated before treatment begins.
The most important distinction is this: Invisalign aligners move teeth; they are not prescribed as a treatment for bruxism. Research has not established clear aligners as either consistently protective or harmful for grinding. A personalized plan matters more than a blanket yes-or-no answer.
Can You Get Invisalign If You Grind Your Teeth?
Often, yes. Mild or moderate clenching does not necessarily prevent predictable tooth movement. However, heavier grinding may wear, roughen, distort, or crack trays and can complicate an already stressed bite or damaged dentition. The orthodontic plan may need closer monitoring, refinements, or a different appliance strategy depending on what the examination shows.
At BLVD Dental Aesthetics, board-certified orthodontist Dr. Judy Naziri generally evaluates the orthodontic movements and bite plan. Dr. Daniel Adelpour contributes the restorative and cosmetic perspective, including existing wear, chips, cracks, bonding, crowns, veneers, and how the teeth should be protected after movement is complete.

What Clenching and Grinding Can Do
Bruxism may happen during sleep or while awake. Some people notice it; others first learn about it after a partner hears grinding or a dentist identifies wear patterns.
Teeth and restorations
Repeated loading may contribute to flattened or shortened teeth, chips, cracks, sensitivity, or stress on fillings, bonding, crowns, and veneers.
Muscles and jaw comfort
Some patients report morning jaw tightness, facial muscle fatigue, temple headaches, or soreness. Those symptoms can have more than one cause and deserve an examination.
Aligner condition
Heavy clenching may leave wear marks or damage a tray. A distorted or cracked aligner should be reported rather than ignored or repaired at home.
Treatment tracking
The orthodontic team checks whether each tray is seating properly and whether the teeth are following the planned movements.
If you are unsure whether your symptoms fit bruxism, read what morning jaw pain can mean and discuss persistent or worsening symptoms with a dentist.
Do Invisalign Aligners Work Like a Night Guard?
Not automatically. Aligners place a layer of plastic between the upper and lower teeth, but their primary purpose is controlled tooth movement. A prescribed night guard or occlusal splint is designed around a different clinical goal. Invisalign’s own Vivera retainer information states that its retainers are not cleared for the treatment of bruxism.
Do not assume that an aligner replaces a night guard, and do not add an over-the-counter guard over moving teeth without professional guidance. If you already wear a night guard, bring it—or tell the team exactly how you use it—during your consultation. Your teeth will be changing position, so the protection strategy may need to change during treatment and again after treatment.
What BLVD Checks Before Recommending Invisalign
- Where and how much the teeth have worn
- Existing chips, cracks, sensitivity, or shortened edges
- Jaw-muscle tenderness and reported joint symptoms
- The bite and the movements needed to align the teeth
- Gum health, bone support, and tooth mobility
- Existing bonding, fillings, crowns, veneers, or implants
- Current night-guard or retainer use
- Whether symptoms suggest another evaluation or referral may be appropriate
This evaluation helps distinguish three separate goals: moving the teeth, protecting vulnerable tooth structure, and managing jaw or muscle symptoms. One appliance should not be assumed to accomplish all three.
What If You Start Clenching More With Aligners?
Some patients become more aware of clenching after starting aligners, while others notice no change or report less discomfort. Current research is mixed. A 2026 systematic review found that most studies suggested a neutral effect overall, with conflicting reports of symptom improvement and increased bruxism-related activity. The evidence remains limited and varied.
Contact the treating team if you develop persistent jaw pain, worsening headaches, a tray that repeatedly cracks or deforms, a change in how the teeth meet, or an aligner that stops seating correctly. Do not simply wear a damaged tray longer, switch trays early, stack appliances, or make your own bite adjustments.
What Happens After Invisalign?
After orthodontic movement, retainers are generally needed to help maintain the new tooth positions. Patients who clench or grind may also need a separate discussion about protecting the teeth and restorations long term. Depending on the bite, wear pattern, restorative work, and symptom history, the retention and protection plan may use one appliance or more than one strategy over time.
If symptoms improve, that does not necessarily mean the underlying risk has disappeared. See BLVD’s guide to whether to stop wearing a night guard when symptoms improve.
Orthodontic Planning With a Restorative Perspective
Dr. Judy Naziri is a board-certified orthodontist who has treated thousands of orthodontic cases with Invisalign and braces. She generally leads movement planning, bite evaluation, tracking, refinements, and stability decisions. Dr. Daniel Adelpour evaluates how tooth wear and existing or future cosmetic restorations fit into the overall sequence of care.
The goal is not merely to make the teeth look straighter. It is to plan tooth movement without overlooking the forces, wear, restorations, or symptoms that could affect the result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can grinding ruin Invisalign trays?
Heavy grinding can mark, roughen, distort, or crack a tray. The clinical importance depends on the damage and whether the aligner still fits and tracks correctly. Contact the treating team rather than guessing.
Will Invisalign stop me from grinding?
Invisalign should not be promised as a cure for clenching or grinding. Current evidence does not show a consistent protective or harmful effect across patients.
Can I wear my night guard over Invisalign?
Do not combine appliances unless your treating clinician specifically plans it. Moving teeth can change the fit, force, and purpose of an existing guard.
What if I already have worn or chipped teeth?
You may still be a candidate, but the sequence matters. The team should decide whether movement, protection, bonding, crowns, veneers, or another treatment should happen first or later.
Are jaw soreness and headaches always caused by grinding?
No. Those symptoms can have dental, muscular, joint, sleep-related, neurologic, or other causes. Persistent or severe symptoms require appropriate evaluation.
Should I bring my current night guard to the consultation?
Yes. It can help the team understand its design, fit, wear pattern, and how it may relate to orthodontic planning.
